El Mirage City is located in Maricopa County, in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is 5 miles from Peoria and 17 miles northwest of Phoenix.

The land was originally inhabited by the Hohokam, who were also known as the Canal Builders. They were skillful irrigation farmers that developed a sophisticated system using only stone instruments. By the time the Spanish settled the area, the Hohokam had disappeared. In 1867, the Hohokam's original canals were retrenched and used for farming.

El Mirage's economy is based primarily on farming and agriculture. New workers and Mexican immigrants arrived in the 1930's to help build canals and harvest crops. The city was founded in 1937 and incorporated in 1951.

El Mirage is close to a number of museums and parks including the Usery Mountain Recreation Area, which features hiking, hanging gardens, and camping. Other nearby parks feature activities such as stargazing, horseback riding, and archery.
