Fountain Hills Town is located in Maricopa County. The area was originally inhabited by the Hohokam Native Americans.

The city was created by a development company in the 1960's, which wanted to use it as a "model city". Fountain Hills was founded on December 15, 1970 with a ceremony that unveiled the "Word's Tallest Fountain", which in actuality is the world's fourth tallest fountain. The fountain sends a geyser of water up 562 feet once per hour.

Many of the first residents purchased property through the "fly to see" sales program in which McCulloch developers showed potential buyers the land via aircraft.

Fountain Hills has been named one of the ten "great" places to raise a family by Parenting magazine and the "best affordable suburb" in Arizona by Businessweek.
