Phoenix is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is the capital of the state of Arizona, and is also the largest city in the state. It covers a total area of 517.9 miles and has about 1.4 million residents. Phoenix is the sixth most populous city in America, and at the same time the most populous state capital in the US.

The name Phoenix describes a city that is born out of the ruins of a former civilization. The name was suggested by Lord Darrell Duppa. Originally settled by the Hohokam people, the history of Phoenix dates back to Jack Swilling, a confederate veteran of the American Civil War who travelled West to seek wealth. He observed the abandoned river valley in White Tank Mountains and considered its potential for farming.

Phoenix became the Capital of the newly formed state of Arizona in 1912 and was preferred to Tucson and Prescott because of its more central location. Though smaller, it outgrew them to become the largest city in Arizona.
