Tempe is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. The city of Tempe is located in Metropolitan Phoenix’s East Valley section and is named after the vale of Tempe in Greece. It covers a total area of about 40.2 square meters and borders Mesa to the East, Guadalupe and Phoenix to the West, Chandler to the South and Scottsdale to the North.

The history of Tempe can be traced to 1865 when US military and Hispanic workers were hired to grow food and animal feed to supply Fort McDowell. However, it was Maricopa and Phoenix railroad in 1887 and the completion of Roosevelt dam in 1911 which accelerated development.

Presently, Tempe is the Headquarters of two of fortune 500 companies; US Airways Group as well as Insight Enterprises. It has hosted the super bowl and has Arizona Mills, one of the largest shopping malls in Arizona.
