Alhambra City is named after Tales of Alhambra, by Washington Irving. It was officially considered a suburb of Los Angeles in 1903. It is west of the San Gabriel Valley and 8 miles from downtown Los Angeles. It is surrounded by San Gabriel, San Marino, South Pasadena, and Monterey Park. Ninety-nine percent of the city's 7.6 square miles is land.
Most of Alhambra's homes have historical significance and are built in Spanish Mediterranean, Colonial, and Bungalow styles. Several neighborhoods have been named historic neighborhoods by the city.

Alhambra has a number of parks with open grass areas, picnic tables, and athletic fields that can be excellent choices for casual rehearsal dinners and cookouts.
