Artesia is part of Los Angeles County and one of the "Gateway Cities". It is surrounded by Cerritos and Norwalk.
Artesia was founded on May 3, 1875, after the Artesia school district was completed. The city was named for the many Artesian wells in the area, which made it fertile farming land. In the 1920's and 1930's, Artesia was one of the most important dairy districts. After World War II, the demand for residential area was high so the dairies moved east.
