Culver City is in Los Angeles County and is mainly surrounded by Los Angeles City. It was originally home to the Tongva-Gabrielino Native Americans. The land Culver City occupies is taken from Rancho Ricon de los Bueyes, Rancho La Ballona, and Rancho La Cienega o Paso de la Tijera.

Culver City has been one of the centers for movies and television production since the 1920's. National Public Radio, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and the NFL Network Studio are all currently based in Culver City.

Major American aerospace and defense contractor, Hughes Aircraft Company, was also headquartered in Culver City from 1932-1985.
