Gardena City is in Los Angeles County, located in the South Bay area. The city is 15 miles south of Los Angeles and approximately 5.9 square miles. Gardena was originally home to the Tongva Native Americans, who would use the wetlands located in the current day Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve for sustenance.

Spencer Roane Thorpe is credited with being the one to start the first settlement in Gardena in 1887. The city was incorporated in 1930 when it combined the communities of Gardena, Strawberry Park, and Moneta into one single city. Gardena was originally a small farming city, but is now a residential and business community.

Notable natives of Gardena include professional poker player Gary Berland, jazz saxophonist Art Pepper, and football player Charlie Evans.
