Palos Verdes Estates is located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County and on the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. The name literally means "green wood". It was incorporated in 1939. The city was planned by notable landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted Jr. and is the 81st richest city in the United States.

Palos Verdes Estates has three major surfing beaches including Haggerty's, Palos Verdes Bluff Coast Beach, and Lunada Bay. Several of the coves in Palos Verdes Estates have also been used as a location for Pirates of the Caribbean. 

Notable residents include Academy Award nominated cinematographer Donald Peterman, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, and Los Angeles Lakers player Matt Barnes.
