Paramount City is part of Los Angeles County and surrounded by Compton, Lynnwood, Bellflower, and Long Beach. The city was originally called "New Spain" by Spanish settlers in 1781. It was organized under Rancho San Pedro and Rancho Los Nietos.

Paramount's economy was first based in dairies and hay, but the high price of land made it difficult for continued success. The last dairy in Paramount closed in 1977.

The city is the home of Frank Joseph Zamboni Jr., the inventor of the ice resurfacing machine. Zamboni & Co. is still based in Paramount. The Zamboni family has also operated the Iceland ice skating rink since 1939.
