Santa Fe Springs is in Los Angeles County and one of the "Gateway Cities". It is 8.9 square miles.
In 1907 the Union Oil Company of California began drilling in Santa Fe Springs. Even though the first attempts at establishing an oil well failed, they found a 2500 foot "gusher" in 1921, which set off an oil rush. By the end of the year, the city was considered one of the richest pools in petroleum history. In 1928 the oil company had to start drilling very deep and production slowed down. Over 440,000,000 barrels of oil were produced by the end of 1938.
The city is mainly industrial. U.S. Aerospace, The Boeing Company, and other aircraft and aerospace companies are all based in Santa Fe Springs.
