South El Monte, which is about 2.8 square miles, is in the San Gabriel Valley. It is located in Los Angeles County and was incorporated in 1958. The city's residents are about 50% White. Other nationalities that make up South El Monte include Pacific Islanders, Latinos, African Americans, and Native Americans. South El Monte's sister cities are Xiantang and Suzhou China.

The city was originally home to the Shoshone Native Americans, but was founded by the Thompson family during the California Gold Rush in the late 1860's. The area was primarily agricultural until the early 1900's.
