South Gate City, which is part of Los Angeles County, was named in 1918 after South Gate Gardens on the Cudahy Ranch. It also became known as the "Azalea City" in 1965. It is considered part of the Gateway Cities region and was originally home to the Gabrielino and Tongva Indians before being settled by Spanish ranchers. The Lugo family was one of California's first families and their land grant included most of what is now South Gate.
