The historic Battle of La Mesa occurred in Vernon the day after the fighting ended in the Mexican-American War at the Battle of Rio San Gabriel. In the late 1800's the city remained an undeveloped grassland. Ranchers James J., Thomas J. Furlong, and John B. Leonis incorporated Vernon in 1905.
Vernon claims that it is "exclusively industrial". Its primary industries are food service manufacturing, glass and plastic equipment manufacturing, and metal working. The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation named Vernon the "Most Business Friendly City" in 2008. It produces approximately $250,000,000 a year.
