Whittier was first settled in 1887 and is only 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles. It had a massive population increase after World War II, followed by another growth spurt in the 1990´s.

Most of the first settlers of Whittier followed the Quaker religion. The city is named after John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker poet. The dedication poem he wrote is featured in the Whittier museum, on a park statue, and another statue near City Hall.
Whittier is also home to Pio Pico State Historic Park, which is named after the last governor of Mexican California. The park is home to one of California´s last remaining 19th century structures.
