Cypress is located in Orange County and is surrounded by La Palma, Garden Grove, Los Alamitos, and Hawaiian Gardens. It was originally inhabited by the Gabrieleno Native Americans, who were expelled from the land by the European settlers. 

The city was nicknamed "Waterville" because of its numerous artesian wells.

Cypress was incorporated in 1956 under the name "Dairy City". Local farmers hoped to preserve their dairies and discourage developers from building in the area. After World War II, the dairies moved to Chino due to rising land values. In 1957, the city was re-named after the Cypress Elementary School, which had Cypress trees planted around it as protection from the Santa Ana winds.
