Fountain Valley is a city that is located in Orange  County, California with a population of approximately 55,000.  With Fountain Valley being a classic "bedroom community," it is a middle-class residential area.

Fountain Valley is 9.0 square miles in size and is approximately 20 feet above sea level.  This puts it slightly lower than the surrounding areas.  The city is surrounded by Huntington Beach, Westminster, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa and the Santa Ana River.  

The area that is now Fountain Valley was inhabited originally by the Tongva people. Fountain valley became an incorporated city in 1957 but was known as Talbert prior to its incorporation. Fountain Valley's name refers to the very high water table in that area around the time its name was chosen.  The early residents constructed drainage canals which made the land usable for agriculture and that remained the land's dominant use until the 1960's.  Around that time construction of large housing tracts began to accelerate.
