La Palma is located in Orange County. It is surrounded by Buena Park, Cypress, and Cerritos. The city was incorporated on October 26, 1955, under the name Dairyland, which referred to its 18 dairies within 1.76 square miles. When the dairies moved east in 1965, the name was changed to La Palma after one of the main avenues, and in honor of its Spanish heritage.

La Palma is primarily residential, commercial, and industrial. Most restaurants and stores are located on Centerpointe, which was part of a major redevelopment project in the 1980's that stimulated the city's economic growth. It is a diverse community, with a large Native American population.

Money Magazine recently named La Palma the 16th best small city in the United States. It has one of the lowest crime rates in Orange County.
