Laguna Beach is located in Orange County, about 19 miles from Santa Ana. It was originally named Lagonas, and founded at the mouth of Bluebird Canyon during the 1870's. After the economic downturn in 1889, the city relocated to the mouth of Laguna Canyon. It was re-named Laguna Beach in 1904.

The city was founded by five families that struggled to farm the hilly area. To earn extra money, they began renting sections of the beach to tourists looking for a summer getaway.

In the 1920's, a group of landscape artists became captivated by Laguna Beach's beauty and began a thriving art community. Laguna Beach is best known for its annual summer festival, Pageant of the Masters, which showcases people posing in sets that look like artwork.
