Los Alamitos is a small city located in Orange County, California with a s lightly declining population of approximately 11,500.   Los Alamitos was incorporated in March of 1960.  Sometimes the city is mistakenly thought to include the unincorporated community of Rossmoor which is adjacent to Los Alamitos and uses the city as its mailing address.  Even though Rossmoor is not a  part of Los Alamitos, some people speculate it may be annexed to Los Alamitos.  There is also speculation that Los Alamitos, Seal Beach and Rossmoor may combine to form a single city.  

Just before the start of, and during the early part of World War II, the area around Los Alamitos became a significant center for the aircraft industry.  A major plant was built adjacent to the airport in Long Beach and Lakewood and soon after the Navy moved its training field to the level ground just south of Los Alamitos.  This new base provided a good number of jobs and boosted modest growth.  Eventually the base was designated as an Armed Forces Reserve Center.  

After the war many of the former military personnel decided to stay in Los Alamitos. They moved into neighborhoods were many of the streets were named after World War II carriers.  Currently zoning laws keep out heavy manufacturing or industry because just about all the city land is developed.  Los Alamitos is 4.3 square miles in area, however, the Armed Forces Reserve Center takes up about 48% of the city.
