Rancho Santa Margarita is one of Orange County's youngest cities and has the longest name of any city in California. It was incorporated on January 1, 2000. The city is named for the Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores land grant, but actually falls within the limits of Rancho Mission Viejo. 

It is situated on the Plano Trabuco plateau and was originally inhabited by the Shoshonean Native Americans. The area was first discovered by Gaspar de Portold on July 24, 1769. The city was an agricultural community that raised cattle. Today it is primarily residential.

The Real Housewives of Orange County, a popular television show, is filmed primarily in Rancho Santa Margarita. Notable natives and residents include hockey player Jonathan Blum, L.A. Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk, and author Martin Dugard.
