Banning City is located in Riverside County, about 80 miles from Los Angeles. The city sits in the San Gorgonio Pass, which is also known as the Banning Pass.

Before they were moved to reservations in 1877, the area was home to the Cahuilla Native Americans. Their population was largely decimated during the smallpox epidemic of 1863. The land became part of Rancho San Gorgonio. Dr. Isaac Smith, who arrived in 1853, was the first white settler in Banning.

The city has been used as a location to shoot movies, including How to Make an American Quilt, Follow Me Home, and Buckshot John. Irving Berlin wrote the popular Christmas song, "White Christmas", while he was in Banning.
