Canyon Lake City is located in Riverside County. It is a gated community that was developed in 1968 by Corona Land Company.  The city was incorporated on December 1, 1990. 

The land that Canyon Lake is situated on was purchased from Henry Evans and B.T. Kuert. It is named for Canyon Lake, which was formed by the Railroad Canyon Dam in 1927. When it was first built, the Railroad Canyon Reservoir was one of the largest fresh water lakes in California for fishing and other recreational activities. 

Canyon Lake was featured in the BBC television documentary, United Gates of America, which explores the effects of living in a gated community. The city's roads are mainly under private ownership, except for two main public roads. Privately owned streets ban all motorcycles, mopeds, and dirt bikes.
