Coachella is a city that is located in Riverside County, California with a population of almost 41,000 residents.  It is one of California's fastest growing cities.   When the city was originally incorporated in 1946, it only had 1,000 residents.  The city is 28.95 square miles in size.  

Originally founded as Woodspur in 1876, the name was changed to Coachella in 1901. However, the origin of the name remains unclear.  Some believe the name is a misspelling of the word Conchilla which is a Spanish word for snail shells that are found in the sandy soil of the valley.
