Barstow City, which was founded in the 1840's, is located in San Bernardino County.

The city was previously called Camp Sugarloaf, Grapevine, and Waterman Junction. It takes its current name from the former president of the Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, William Barstow Strong. 

Barstow is in the center of several major highways, including Interstate 40 and Interstate 15. It is considered a major transportation center, serving over 20,000 tour buses a year. It is home to BNSF Railway and the Marine Corps Logistics Base.

The area has a desert climate, with summer highs reaching 118 degrees Fahrenheit. Winters are cold, with an average temperature of 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
