Colton City is located in San Bernardino County. It is the location of Colton Crossing, one of the busiest railroad crossings in the United States. The crossing was built by the California Southern Railroad in 1882.

The area was originally inhabited by the Guachama, San Gorgonio, and Serrano Native American tribes. In the 1840's, the land was part of Jurupa and the San Bernardino Rancho.

Colton was founded in 1875 and incorporated twelve years later. The city was named after Civil War general and the Vice President of the Southern Pacific Railroad, David Douty Colton.

Notable natives and residents include Wyatt Earp, songwriter Jimmy Webb, and football player Dennis Crane.
