Campbell City is located in Santa Clara County. It is situated in the Silicon Valley. 

The land that Campbell sits on was once part of the the Alta California Rancho Rinconada de Los Gatos land grant. Benjamin Campbell, after whom the city is named, established the town in 1851. He grew hay and grain in the area that is now Campbell's historical downtown district.

The city was a center for shipping fruit and home to Hyde Cannery, J.C. Ainsley Packing Company, and Payne Cannery. After Campbell was incorporated in 1952, many of the orchards were cleared to make room for the city's rapid development. Today the area is mainly residential.

Notable natives and residents include world powerlifting champion Alan Aerts and author Sylvia Browne.
