Los Gatos, which is situated in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, is located in Santa Clara County. Its name refers to the cougars that are native to the area. "Los Gatos" is the Spanish word meaning "the cats".

The town was founded with the building of Forbes Mill in the 1850's. It was incorporated in 1887. During the 20th century, Los Gatos was known for growing grapes, prunes, and apricots. 

Today Los Gatos is an affluent community. It was ranked 33rd by Bloomberg Businessweek in affluence, and is known for its antique shops, boutiques, upscale restaurants, and arts community.
