Milpitas City is located in Santa Clara County. It is situated in the Silicon Valley, bordered by East Bay and Fremont. 

The area was originally home to the Tamyen people, a subgroup of the Ohlone Native Americans. Its name comes from the Mexican-Spanish word for cornfield. 

During the 18th century, Milpitas was a crossroads between Mission Santa Clara de Asis and Mission San Jose de Guadalupe. English, Irish, and German immigrants began to settle the area in the 1850's. 

The city's economy is heavily dependent on the computer industry. It is home to the headquarters for LSI Corporation, Maxtor, Cisco Systems, JDSU, Flextronics, Intersil, Adaptec, and SanDisk.
