Lowell is a city that is located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Together with the city of Cambridge, Lowell is the county seat of Middlesex County. The city covers a total area of about 14.5 square miles.

The city was first settled in 1653. It grew and was incorporated in 1826. It is sometimes referred to as the cradle of the industrial revolution in the US. It was then mostly a farming community and had a thriving textile industry. It was named after Francis C. Lowell.
