Auburn City is located primarily in King County, with a small portion being in Pierce County. It is a suburb of the Seattle metropolitan area and surrounded by Federal Way, Algona, Sumner, and Kent.

The city was originally named "Slaughter" after Lt. William Slaughter. It was re-named Auburn after a large group from Auburn, New York settled in the area in 1893. It was primarily agricultural, but has developed into a residential and industrial community.

Auburn is currently home to the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation, which is in the southern part of the city. It has 29 parks featuring hiking and biking trails, open grassland, and bird watching towers. 

Notable natives and residents include rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot, actor Cam Gigandet, comic artist D.C. Simpson, and NASCAR driver Jeff Barkshire.
