Covington City, which is surrounded by Kent, Auburn, and Maple Valley, is located in King County. The area was originally called Jenkins Prairie.

The city grew slowly until The Northern Pacific Railway built a track through the area in the 1900's. Covington was an unincorporated part of Kent until its incorporation on August 31, 1997.

Covington is a residential community, with its economy based primarily in retail. Most of the stores are located along the SR-516 corridor. The city has grown rapidly since its incorporation and continues to attract more businesses.
