Enumclaw City

Enumclaw City is located in King County. It is situated on the Enumclaw Plateau, which was formed by volcanic material from Mount Rainier. The city was incorporated on January 11, 1895.

Its name comes from the Salish Native American word which means "place of evil spirits". Local residents interpret the name to mean "thundering noise", in reference to the wind storms that often occur.

Allen L. Porter, who arrived in 1853, was one of the first white settlers in what is present-day Enumclaw. In 1885, the Northern Pacific Railroad laid a track through the area, which prompted Frank and Mary Stevenson to build a hotel and help develop the city. Locals wanted to name the city after them, but they declined.
