Peter Kirk, a British born businessman found out about the discovery of iron deposits and coal mines in Kirkland with trains under construction. Perfect conditions for establishment of a steel mill, he went there in order to expand their family steel business. With help from associates, he bought the land in 1888 and started his steel mill, which was the basis of present day Kirkland, itself named after him.

Wool milling and war ship building later became major industries in Kirkland. There are many companies that have a presence in Kirkland. They include Papillon Airways, BGC3 (Bill Gates Catalyst 3) and Bluetooth Special Interest Group. Google, IBM and Microsoft also have development offices there.
