Mercer Island is a city that is located in King County, Washington. Mercer Island sits on Lake Washington and is within the Seattle Metropolitan area. Covering a total area of about 12.9 square miles, it is the most populated island in a lake within America.

People first settled in Mercer Island in the 1870s. The city is named after the Mercer family of Seattle who often rowed between Seattle and the island to fish and pick berries. But it was the building of the East Channel Bridge in 1928 and the Lacey V Murrow Memorial Bridge in 1940 that opened up the island. Rapid growth led to the city’s incorporation in 1960.
