Hawaiian Gardens is a city that is located in Los Angeles County, California and is the smallest city in the county. It was incorporated in 1964 and has a dwindling population of approximately 14,000.
The city's unusual name came from a 1920's refreshment stand decorated with palm fronds and bamboo. At that time it was the area's main landmark for many years and the name stuck as the town grew around it. As one of seven city in Los Angeles County that allows gambling, approximately 65% ($9.2 million) of the city's revenue comes from it's casino, the Hawaiian Gardens Casino which is also the cities largest employer, employing over 1,000 people.
Hawaiian Gardens is bordered by Long Beach and Lakewood in Los Angeles County and the city of Cypress in Orange County. It's total area is only 1 square mile and is the smallest of all cities in Los Angeles County.
