Laguna Niguel is a master planned community in Orange County, California.  It is very affluent and is located in the coastal San Joaquin Hills.  It has a growing population of nearly 63,000 residents.  Most of the housing in the area is comprised of condominium and large mansions overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  Laguna Niguel has a total area of 14.9 square miles.

Laguna Niguel was made one of the first master planned communities in California in 1959 by the Laguna Niguel Corporation.  The construction of the I-5 San Diego Freeway in 1959 allowed many more people to arrive in Laguna Niguel.  Laguna Niguel became an incorporated city on December 1, 1989 and became Orange County's 29th city.  

Of note is that Laguna Niguel's McKayla Maroney made it to the London 2012 Olympic Games.  She won the silver medal in the vault finals and the gold medal in team finals. She is known for her "not impressed" face during the medal ceremony for the vault finals because she had been favored to win gold.
