San Diego County

San Diego County is located in the southwest corner of California.  It is the most southwestern county in the 48 contiguous States.  The largest city and the county seat is San Diego.  The population of San Diego County is almost 3.1 million people which makes it the 2nd most populated county in California, right after Los Angeles County.

The area that is now know as San Diego County has been inhabited by Kumeyaay, Luiseno, Cupeno and Cahuilla Indians for more than 10,000 years.  San Diego County is approximately 4,525 square miles and is larger in area than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined.  

 

San Diego County became a part of the United States in 1848 as a result of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, effectively ending the US-Mexican War.  It was one of the original counties in California and was created at the same time as California obtained its statehood in 1850.  

There are 18 recognized Indian reservations in San Diego County which is more than any other county in the United States.  Even though they are typical in size compared to other Indian reservations in California, they are still relatively small compared to others in the United States.  All together they only total 200 square miles.

If you will be getting married in San Diego County, you can obtain a marriage license at any Clerks Office. The license is effective immediately and is valid for up to 90 days.   It can be used anywhere in the state of California.
