Coronado is a city located in San Diego County, California. It is an affluent resort city which is about 5.2 miles from downtown San Diego. It lies on a peninsula connected to the mainland by the 10 mile silver strand isthmus. Coronado covers a total area of approximately 32.7 miles and has a population of about 24,000 people.

Coronado was founded in the year 1885. Jacob Gruendike, E. L. Babcock and Hampton L. Story bought land with the intention to build a resort city. By the year 1888, they had succeeded in building Hotel del Coronado making the city a major resort destination. They also formed baseball, athletic and boating clubs in Coronado.

Coronado is among the most expensive places to live in the US. It is in the top 20 most expensive cities in America and it is not hard to see why. Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research Dr. S. Leatherman ranks Coronado beach as the best beach in America.

There are several festivals held in Coronado such as the July 4th parade, the Coronado Island Sports Fiesta which is also held in July, as well as the Coronado Flower show held every third week of April.

Notable residents of Coronado include William Thayer Tutt who is a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and Chad Fox an MLB pitcher. Others are Republican Senator John McCain and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
