Calumet City is located in Cook County and is often referred to as "Cal City". It is surrounded by Chicago, Burnham, Lansing, and Dolton. The city was founded in 1892, when Schrumville and Sobieski Park merged. It was originally called West Hammond, but the name was changed to Calumet in 1924.

Calumet had more men join the armed forces in World War I that any other community in the United States. There is a bronze plaque with the name of every citizen who served in the war in West Hammond's Memorial Park.

Calumet is known as the original "Sin City". When prohibition began in 1919, the area became a center for speakeasies, prostitution, and gambling. Illegal nightclubs opened throughout the city, with a large concentration on State Street, which became known as "The Strip."

In your free time you can relax at River Oaks Golf Course or view the Calumet City Historical Society Museum. When visiting Calumet, make sure to take note of the city's two water towers that are painted with "Have a Nice Day" smiley faces. They have been considered notable landmarks since 1973.
