The area was once an open prairie and home to the Native Americans, who would make tools and build burial mounds along the river. The first white settlers came in the 1840's. Elmwood Park was incorporated in 1914 and was nicknamed "Mud Town", because the low prairie areas were easily flooded.
Notable natives of Elmwood Park include hockey coach Val Belmonte, and Lee Loughnane, one of the founding members of the rock band Chicago.
Elmwood Park has unique resources to help you find everything on your wedding checklist including vendors for wedding cakes, flowers, and venues. You can find a large selection of flowers, favors, centerpieces, and chair covers at Anjeli's Flowers to complement an indoor, garden-themed wedding at Royal Gardens. Royal Gardens also offers an affordable wedding package which includes decorations, catering, music, and a dance floor.
In your leisure time you can relax at one of the village's outdoor parks or visit the aquatic center. If you are interested in exploring the history of the city, the Elmwood Park Public Library is worth a visit.
