Melrose Park Village is located in Cook County. The village was established in 1882, when residents of the area voted to establish their own municipality. The first Italian Americans settled in Melrose Park in 1888. Its population was mainly Italian-American for years, but the Mexican-American population has grown substantially. In 2000, about 54% of Melrose Park's residents were Hispanic.

After World War I, a variety of new industries moved into the city, which led to an increase in jobs. Melrose Park is home to several companies, including Stern Pinball, Inc., which is the world's largest manufacturer of pinball machines. 

During the 1990's the city improved their parks, streets, and athletic fields, which attracted new businesses and home owners.
