Niles Village is located in Cook County. It is 5.9 square miles and was incorporated on August 24,1899. Surrounding cities include Chicago, Skokie, Morton Grove, and Park Ridge. No one is certain how Niles Village got its name, but one theory is that it was named after Niles Construction, which did a lot of the early building during the founding of the city.

In 1946, Niles became the first community in both Illinois and the United States to offer free ambulance service. The Leaning Tower of Niles, which is a small-scale replica of The Leaning Tower of Pisa, is a notable landmark and was briefly featured in the movie Wayne's World. Another notable landmark is the historic Tam O'Shanter Golf Course, which hosted the Western Open in 1964 and 1965 and the PGA All American Open from 1941 to 1957.
