Northlake is located in Cook County, 14 miles from the Chicago Loop. The city was originally called Midland until the local government ran a contest to find a new name. Northlake comes from the names of two major roads in the community. It is also known as "The City of Friendly People".
The area was used for farmland until World War II, which brought industry to Northlake. To help grow the community, semi-finished houses were advertised at low rates. Buyers completed the painting, electrical fixtures, and plumbing. The city was incorporated in 1949.
Northlake is primarily white, but also has a large Hispanic population.
