Palos Heights is located in Cook County. It is 3.9 square miles and surrounded by the Cook County Forest Preserves, Palos Park, and Crestwood. The area was originally a swamp, which made it slow to develop. In 1851 there was only one road through the city and no farmhouses.

In the 1860's, German and Irish immigrants began to farm the more manageable land and use its hilly ground as pastures. The eastern edge of the city was made into a lumberyard. Most of the businesses developed along Harlem Avenue, and continue to thrive there today.
Notable natives from Palos Heights include baseball player Jim Hughes, basketball player Quentin Richardson, and 1984 Olympic hockey team member Ed Olczyk.
