Richton Park is a village that is located in Cook County, Illinois with a population of approximately 13,000.  It shares borders with Matteson on the north, Park Forest on the east, and University Park and Crete on the south.  The village has an area of 3.4 square miles.  

Before European settlers moved into the area in the early 1800's, the Sauk Trail was used by the Sauk Indians to move between their settlements.  Their sacred areas stretched from the Mississippi all the way to what is now Ottowa, Canada.  During the 1800's the trail was also used by the settlers.  Therefore, when the Illinois Central railroad was built, the intersection of the railroad and the Sauk Trail became a very busy area.  This laid the foundation for the beginnings of Richton Park.  

At the time that Missouri was a territory and petitioning to become a state, many settlers would go west by wagon train to Missouri on the Sauk Trail.  They wanted to make sure the state entered the Union as a free state, not as one that supported slavery.  Many years before the Civil War started, Sauk Trail was a part of the underground railroad.  Many slaves were secretly transported to their freedom in Canada
