Riverdale is a village that is located in Cook County, Illinois with a population of approximately 16,000. The size of the village is approximately 3.8 square miles.
The villages of Riverdale and Dolton were practically one community until they each incorporated in 1892. Now Riverdale has neighborhoods knows as Ivanhoe and Highlawn.
It is the general consensus that George Dolton was the first settler to the area in 1835. He established a homestead close to a Potawatomi Indian reservation and it is now the site of Acme Steel. A year later, J.C. Matthews settled nearby and the area began to grow.
The County government granted a river ferry license to Matthews and Dolton in 1836 and the two built a toll ferry. It crossed the Calumet River at a place that was known as "Riverdale Crossing."
Levi Osterhoudt came to the area in 1840 and he, along with Dolton were given permission by the State of Illinois to begin construction on a toll bridge crossing the Calumet River.
