Massachusetts, technically the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is a state located in the northeastern region of the United States with a population of roughly 6,600,000 residents which makes it the 14th most populated state in the US.  However, it is the 7th smallest state in size with an area of 10,555 square miles.  It is also the 3rd most densely populated state in the US.

Massachusetts has played a significant role in our history.  In 1620, passengers of the Mayflower, the Pilgrims, founded the first colony in Plymouth.  Massachusetts is also home to Harvard University which was founded in 1636.  Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning in the US.  

Originally, Massachusetts was dependent on agriculture, fishing and trade.  However, during the Industrial Revolution, the economy turned to manufacturing.  In the 20th century, the economy went from manufacturing to services and now, in the 21st century, it is a leader in high technology, health care technology, financial services and higher education.
