Michigan is a state in the Great Lakes area of the United States.   It has a population of approximately 10,000,000 people.  The largest city in Michigan is Detroit and its capital is Lansing.  It was admitted into the union and became the 26th state on January 26, 1837.  The state has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world.  It is bounded by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes plus Lake Saint Clair.  

Michigan is a leading state for recreational boating as it has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds.  There is not a spot in the state that is more than 6 miles from a natural water source and nothing is further than 85 miles from the shoreline of a Great Lake.  

Michigan is the only state with two peninsulas.  There is a lower peninsula which is shaped like a mitten and an upper peninsula which is very sparsely populated. However, the Upper Peninsula is important to the state economically because it is a popular tourist destination and has an abundance of natural resources.
