New York is a state in the northeastern United States.  It is the 27th most extensive and the 3rd most populous of the 50 United States.  It is also the 7th most densely populated state.  It is often referred to as New York State in order to distinguish it from New York City.  New York is one of the original 13 states and became an independent state on July 9, 1776.

New York is 54,556 square miles in size and is the 27th largest state.  The vast majority of the state is dominated by forests, farms, rivers, lakes and mountains which is in sharp contrast to New York City's urban atmosphere.  New York is home to Adirondack Park (the largest state park in the United States).  Adirondack Park is larger than the Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier and Olympic National Parks combined.
